Mains and services make up the network that sustains a gas distribution system. Gas mains supply gas to new customers, reinforce supply to an existing gas distribution system, relocate an existing facility, or replace an obsolete facility. Mains are made of cast iron, steel, or plastic. A gas service line, or service, allows the customer to connect to the gas distribution main either directly or through the customer meter. Services are constructed of steel, copper, or plastic.
Gas mains and services provide safe and continuous natural gas to customers when properly installed, operated, and maintained.
